Remember the pattern

Repeat. Audiences will recognize it from before and begin to compare & contrast the similarities and differences. It's a good way to imply change/development.

Subvert the pattern

Give it a third time. Now there's no mistaking that a pattern exists, and you've got a base upon which to build meaning. Does it continue on a forward path? Does it veer off the path to surprise the audience expectations?
